Eyelash curlers – which ones to choose and how to use them?

Eyelash curler helps to achieve a spectacular effect of curling, thickening and lengthening eyelashes. Thanks to it, your eyes also appear larger. However, improperly chosen eyelash curler will not give you the effects you expect and can even further weaken and damage your lashes. Consequently, your eyelashes start to brittle and fall out. Although eyelash curler seems to be a very useful accessory, it’s worth knowing what to choose and how to use it. What are the types of eyelash curler and does it actually destroy the eyelashes?

Eyelash curler – types

Basically, there are two types of eyelash curlers: mechanical and heated, but both have some subcategories. Generally speaking, mechanical eyelash curlers are cheaper whereas electrical ones are more effective.

Types of eyelash curlers

Mechanical eyelash curlers

Mechanical eyelash curlers may vary in size (narrow or wide) and material (plastic or metal). It is good to try metal curlers equipped with removable silicone or rubber pads, because they are safer for eyelashes and generally last longer. Plastic eyelash curlers do not have such properties. They are unstable and the effect is not spectacular. What’s more, they can break your eyelashes.

Heated eyelash curlers

Heated eyelash curlers are either mini-curlers or classic eyelash curlers, though battery operated. Regardless of the form, they work the same way: they slightly heat up after switching on and give a lasting effect of curling eyelashes – it lasts longer than that of the mechanical curler.

Another criterion for choosing an eyelash curler is its size. More convenient and more effective are those that cover all eyelashes in one move. The shape of the eyelash curler is equally important; those with rounded ends give a more natural effect than those with square.

Eyelash curler – how to use it?

If you’ve managed to choose the right eyelash curler for you, you’ve made the first step. The second one is equally important: you have to learn how to use it. Incorrectly used, eyelash curler can significantly deteriorate the condition of eyelashes. If you pick the heated curler, the package should include an instruction sheet. Standard heated eyelash curlers are used in the same way the mascaras are. The only difference is the effect – your eyelashes are curled instead of being coated. Regardless of the type, if the curler has a classic shape, it is more complicated to use. For this reason, you should know the following rules:

  1. Use the eyelash curler before applying mascara. Otherwise, if the wax contained in the mascara sticks to the eyelash curler, eyelashes will stick to it as well.
  2. If your eyelashes are stiff and thick, it is good to heat the eyelash curler with a stream of warm air from the dryer. However, just right before using it, check if the curler is not too hot because it can burn your lashes and eyelids.
  3. Make sure the hand in which you hold the curler is stable. The movements of a trembling hand will not be precise and may destroy the eyelashes. To prevent this, place your hand on your check in such a way that the hand is stable and still.
  4. Do not use the eyelash curler while driving, even while waiting for the green light, regardless of whether or not you’re the driver. If the car unexpectedly moves, you may damage or even break your eyelashes.
  5. It’s recommended to grab the curler with your thumb and middle finger as it gives you more control over the process. However, if you prefer to use your forefinger, stick to it.
  6. Curl your lashes in stages. Clamp down on your lashes for a few seconds but no more than 10, otherwise the lashes will be unnaturally bent. Place the eyelash curler as close to the root of your eyelashes as possible, clamp down and wait, then move downwards repeating the procedure until you get the desired effect.
  7. The eyelash curler is intended to curl only the upper lash line; the lower line is naturally curled so there is no need to interfere in the process.

Is eyelash curler bad for your eyelashes?

Properly selected and used, a good quality eyelash curler does not damage eyelashes. However, in the case of mechanic eyelash curlers, make sure that the rubber pad is exactly in the area where eyelashes are placed. This protection is very important because it cushions the eyelashes. Also, plastic curlers are not recommended as the effects are far from the desired. In addition, to avoid burning eyelashes and eyelids, do not use the curlers that are too hot. Generally speaking, the eyelash curler should not destroy the eyelashes, its harmful effect are caused by its users mainly. The most serious mistake is using the curler that is dirty in mascara. The consequences include brittling or even eyelash loss.
